O
ne of the ways the boys passed the time, especially in winter quarters, was playing tricks on one another.

Neal Sexton was one fellow in the unit particularly fond of jokes. On one occasion he emptied his pipe down the open drawers of Gregory "Buke" Sheppard who was sleeping. Slowly he woke up and then jumped up to the ceiling and started yelling like a Baptist preacher at a camp meeting.

Old Buke got him back though. He spent all the next night filling Neal's musket with manure. The next morning was our brigade inspection and what a scene it was when
Captain Hunter inspected the rifle of unsuspecting Mr. Sexton.  He spent the next week in the guard house.
