By far the most fightenest man in the unit was our captain, David "Black Dave" Hunter. He would fight anybody or anything.

Captain Hunter was a strict diciplinarian and made us abide by the all army rules. Drill, drill, and more drill were the orders of the day. It was hard on the boys at first but it made the company one of the best in the regiment and the boys loved him for it.

Sometimes the boys got back at "Black Dave" for being so hard in drill.  They would sneak up behind the officer's tent and started yellin' about how all the Huntersville girls were ugly as cross-eyed snapping turtles. The Captain would get so mad that he chased them through the woods in nothing but his drawers and swinging his sword.
