The uniforms worn by North Carolina’s soldiers evolved through the four years of the war. North Carolina clothed its troops entering Confederate service and later assumed the task to provide clothing for all of her soldiers. Driven by an increasing demand for clothing, the state Quartermaster’s Department soon introduced clothing that was both simpler and quicker to manufacture and made the best use of the limited resources available. The recreations below show the most common examples of North Carolina uniforms and the period of the war these were in use.
