North Carolina Troops, August 1862

This soldier shows a typical North Carolina infantryman in the Army of Northern Virginia, late summer, 1862.  He is still wearing his state uniform, but it shows the effects of the campaign around Richmond.  He has exchanged his musket for a captured US Model 1861 rifle-musket and accouterments. He has dropped his knapsack in favor a captured Federal blanket but he has retained his canteen and haversack issued earlier by the state.
